When you have your eye on the prize, what ultimately gets you to the finish line? Most of you will answer the prize is what gets you to the finish line, but I think it’s the journey that ultimately pushes us to keep going. We can get wrapped up in what we want and forget to appreciate the path that eventually leads us to the goal. I believe that if we cannot gain anything more than winning the prize, the prize may not seem enough. In other words, you can want the new dress, but when you look at the prize tag and see its cost, it can lose appeal. It being a pretty dress doesn’t account for it’s price but if it were flattering, pretty, and made us feel good we could account for the price. When obstacles, or un-foreseen circumstances arise we tend to re-evaluate the worth of the things we are seeking. If the benefits do not out weigh the troubles, we will lose interest. This perspective can be subjective. We can convince ourselves to see the thing we want as less valuable when nothing about it changed, but the cost became scary. In relation to a business, as new business owners we do the same thing. Some of you may not make it in the field simply because you hold yourself back. Something will come up that seems to make running a business more of a hassle than it is worth. So, you give up. The finish line is never crossed, because the journey wasn’t as easy as you anticipated.
You can want something, but the physical prize is nearly a piece of the ultimate reward.
I think we have all witnessed this at some point in our lives. To run with the analogy from earlier, this could be as simple as buying a dress or as intricate as running a business. Either way, we all face the loud voice that is self-doubt. We can afford the dress, we like the dress, and we look good in the dress, but when we see that price tag, we are convinced it is not worth the price. Paying that much for a piece of fabric seems absurd. So, we tell ourselves we don’t like the dress, it’s not that flattering, and the price does not fit its worth. Before I continue, yes I know there are dresses that are not worth the price point, and by no means am I telling you to buy something you really cannot afford. With that being said, the point is to look at the worth. This analogy is made with the assumption that you are looking at a dress that is a tad bit pricey but not outside of your means. The overwhelmingly honest point I am making is that we limit ourselves. We make conclusions to ease our anxieties. We will prevent ourselves from reaching our goals and will chalk it up to being “too much” when in fact its not the obstacle that is doing the most, its you. I full heartedly believe there is nothing we cannot achieve if we put in the work, dedication, and always remember our whys. Remember why you want it, why you deserve it, and why you are doing what you are doing. The cost can be determined by you. You can justify its worth or you can say its too much.
How we determine worth varies
When building a business, you will undoubtedly be met with challenges. Whether or not that business grows will be determined by how much you think it’s worth. If you get discouraged by a lack of interest from buyers or potential clients, see how much you have to invest financially and physically with your time, or are faced with making hard decisions, you may tell yourself it’s not worth it. When bringing in new clients becomes more complicated than you thought, you may feel like you are wasting your time. I will not lie to you; it will bring rain onto anyone’s parade. That being said, you can decide those things are small hoops you have to jump through in order to reach your goals. When I say it’s about the journey and not the prize it is because the prize can only be as appealing as you allow it to be. The journey will be where you find the worth in the prize. The mistakes we make will be how we learn, which will make us appreciate the worth of what we are looking to achieve.
How we determine worth varies. We can convince ourselves of anything, including worth. Having your own business sounds beautiful. Anyone can start one, but those who flourish are the ones that see the value of continuing, even through the ups and downs it comes with it. The prize that is running a business can be appealing to all of us, but that does not mean it will be done by us all because not all of us can look past the sacrifices included in its price. Some will start the journey, only to never reach the finish line due to obstacles they didn’t account for coming. Those who have crossed the finish line will all tell you the same thing; it was hard but worth it and the knowledge and resources gained will always out weight the struggles faced. As the struggles and down falls will be the things you learn from and appreciate because they are the reason you will get to the finish line.
